Cold brewing black tea in a glass pitcher

Rich, Bold, and Refreshingly Smooth

Cold Brew Black Tea

Black tea is the classic base for iced tea, but cold brewing it takes it to an entirely new level to avoid any bitterness or chalkiness.

The Best Black Teas for Cold Brewing

Not all black teas are created equal when it comes to cold brewing. Heavily processed commodity tea bags often yield a flat, muddy tasting cold brew. For the best flavour, you want whole-leaf black teas.

  • Darjeeling: Known as the "champagne of teas," Darjeeling makes a light, floral, and incredibly refreshing cold brew with muscatel notes.
  • Earl Grey: Cold brewing Earl Grey is spectacular. The cold water perfectly extracts the bright, citrusy bergamot oil without any astringency.
  • Assam: If you love a bold, malty, and strong iced tea (perhaps to mix with milk), cold brewed Assam is the way to go.

Steeping Times & Ratios

Black tea is heavily oxidized and robust, meaning it requires more time to release its flavours in cold water compared to green or white teas.

  • The Ratio: Use 1 rounded tablespoon of loose leaf black tea for every 1 litre of cold water.
  • The Steep: Black tea benefits from a long, slow steep. Leave it in the fridge for 10 to 14 hours. Steeping overnight is usually the easiest method.
