The Ultimate Refreshment
Cold Brew Green Tea
Green tea is famously difficult to brew hotly without it becoming bitter. Cold brewing solves this entirely, creating a vibrant, umami-rich drink perfect for warm days.
Why Cold Brew Green Tea?
Green tea leaves are delicate. Boiling water burns them instantly, releasing a harsh, astringent bite. Even with careful temperature control (around 80°C), it's easy to over-steep green tea.
Cold brewing bypasses the heat entirely. The slow extraction draws out L-theanine (a sweet, relaxing amino acid) and vibrant, grassy flavours, while leaving behind the bitter catechins. The result is an incredibly refreshing, sweet, and smooth green tea that almost tastes like a different beverage entirely.
The Perfect Cold Brew Green Tea Recipe
To cold brew green tea, follow these very simple steps:
- The Ratio: Use 1-2 teaspoons of loose leaf green tea for every 250ml (1 cup) of cold, filtered water.
- The Vessel: Place the leaves at the bottom of a pitcher or a dedicated cold brew bottle.
- The Steep: Fill with cold water and place in the fridge. Green tea extracts quickly! Unlike black tea which needs 12 hours, green tea is usually perfect in just 4 to 6 hours.
- The Strain: Remove the leaves to halt the brewing process once it reaches your desired strength.
