Less Jitters, More Flavour
Caffeine in Cold Brew Tea
One of the most common questions about cold brew tea is regarding its caffeine level. Is it higher or lower than hot tea?
Cold Brew Tea Generally Has Less Caffeine
The short answer is: Yes, cold brew tea contains caffeine, but significantly less than the equivalent hot-brewed tea.
Caffeine is a highly water-soluble compound, but its solubility relies heavily on temperature. Boiling water extracts caffeine from tea leaves very rapidly. Cold water, on the other hand, is a poor solvent for caffeine. Even when steeped for 12 hours, cold water extracts only about 50% to 75% of the caffeine that hot water would extract in just 3 minutes.
Caffeine Levels by Tea Type
If you are looking to manage your caffeine intake, the type of tea you choose to cold brew matters just as much as the method:
- Matcha / Green Teas: Generally medium caffeine. Cold brewing green tea extracts the calming L-theanine effectively, mitigating any minor caffeine jitters.
- Black Teas: Tend to have the highest baseline caffeine, but a cold brew black tea still has less caffeine than a hot cup of coffee.
- White Tea: Contains caffeine, but generally at very low levels under cold brew conditions.
- Herbal Teas: 100% naturally caffeine-free.
